The Brontë Babies
Fielding a midnight plea for help from a woman living in her car — her boyfriend had kicked her out of the house, along with the two kittens she'd rescued — we took on the three-week-old emaciated Brontë babies.
Because Emily B was too young to withstand the full anesthesia required to enucleate her ulcerated eye, Doc Sargeant did a minimal procedure with local anesthetic to remove only the abscessed portion. Emily's "sister" kitten Charlotte turned out to be a boy, so we renamed “her” Branwell — after the brilliant literary sisters’ ne’er-do-well brother. His infected umbilical hernia was successfully treated with topical antibiotics.
We were fortunate that the wonderful Kitten Central of Placer County stepped up for us, taking in both Brontë babies and covering Emily B's enucleation surgery. As soon as they were stable, the trio found loving forever homes. We're so grateful for Katy and the KC crew's generosity and expertise in caring for our neonates in crisis.
